The stiff competition for passengers across different routes throughout the globe has seen to it that airlines are constantly innovating and tailoring their products to meet the specific needs of their passengers. Air China is one such airline and a quick look at its simplified baggage policy shows that it's a service that is meant not only to meet the needs of the passengers but also to inspire their loyalty to the airline. Let's take a look at what they offer.

The Airlines checked in baggage policy places a restriction of 32kg (70lbs) on the checked in baggage for international flights and 50 kg(110lbs) for local flights. The dimensions of the baggage are not to exceed 203cm or 80 inches when length, width, and height are added. However, these dimensions should not be less than 60 cm or 24 inches and the weight should not be less than 2kg. Otherwise, baggage that is either oversized or overweight will be shipped as cargo and a charge of 1.5% for each additional kilogram will be charged on all excess baggage.

Free baggage allowance is as per the purchased ticket. First class travelers are allowed up to 40 kg or 88 lbs for each checked baggage, while the Business Class travelers are allowed up to 30kg or 66lbs of checked baggage without charge. This varies by a big margin for the Economy Class travelers who can check in 20kg or 44lbs of baggage. Infants whose fare has been purchased at a 10% fee of the adult fare are extended free baggage allowance of 10kg or 22lbs.

Availability of space also guarantees them a non-billed allowance for their prams or cradles. A further provision is made for passengers traveling on the airline's special tickets for additional baggage regardless of the class of travel. The Phoenix Miles Platinum Card holders can bring along additional 30 kgs of free baggage while both the Star Gold Card Members and the Phoenix Miles Silver Card holders are allowed 20 kg of free baggage.

Passengers looking to travel with some carry on baggage are strictly advised that their baggage should be able to fit under their seats or in the space in the overhead cabin. The ideal dimension, for each luggage, therefore is 50cm x 40 cm x 20 cm or 21''x15'' x 7''. First class and Business class travelers on international flights are allowed only two pieces of carry-on luggage weighing just 8 kg while their Economy class counterparts are allowed only one piece of carry-on luggage weighing 5kg. In the domestic flights, passengers on the first class are allowed 2 pieces of carry on luggage while those in the Business class and Economy class are allowed only one piece. In both cases, the carry on luggage should not exceed 5kg.

Any passenger seeking compensation for damaged baggage should make a claim in seven days after receiving the baggage. On the other hand, a delayed baggage claim should be made 21 days within the occurrence of the incident. Claims made 2 years after the incident are unacceptable. Compensation for damage or loss of baggage on domestic flights is RMB 100 per kg (2.2 lbs) or equivalent currency. However, if baggage lost is of a value lower than RMB 100, the passenger is compensated the actual value of the baggage after depreciation is factored in or the actual cost of repair is established.International flights that fit the Warsaw convention are subject to a compensation limit of 17 SDR/KG and 332 SDR/KG for unchecked baggage. For international flights that fit under the Montreal convention, the compensation is limited to $30 per kg and the compensation limit is 1000 special drawing rights. In all these situations if the damage value is lower than the limits specified, the compensation will be the actual damage value.

Delayed baggage is compensated according to the class the passenger was traveling on. Economy class passengers are compensated at RMB 300, Business Class passengers are compensated at RMB 400 and First Class passengers are compensated at RMB 500. The compensation is done on an equivalent currency basis.

Finally, Restricted items not acceptable in the checked baggage are; currency, items of high value like jewelry, important commercial documents, travel certificates, electronic devices and medication that is needed for use during the flight. Air China allows certain items on the plane only after consent has been granted. These are; pieces of equipment meant for athletics, animals, electronic wheelchairs, sharp items that can be used to cause harm and precision instruments. In addition to these, any items classified as dangerous goods are not allowed in any baggage.
