Summary
Last update: 23 Nov 2016

Since its founding in 2001 Air Astana has been steadily growing in its fleet, and for this reason, they have worked on a baggage policy that seeks to cater to its growing clientele. The airline boasts of having the best connections to most of the major competitive routes in Asia and aims to stand out amongst competitors in these routes by putting their customer's interest first.

Checked Baggage Allowance

Firstly, it is worth noting that for this airline, only passengers who have booked a ticket are entitled to checked baggage allowance. Thus Business Class passengers will be allowed 30 kg of checked baggage while their counterparts in the Economy Class will be allowed checked baggage which weighs up to 20kg. The maximum weight acceptable for any checked baggage is 32kg, or 70 lbs and any passenger who carries baggage excessive of this weight will be required to repackage the baggage or redistribute the items to other baggage below the weight limits. When it comes to the dimensions of the baggage, it should not surpass 158cm once all the measurements are factored.

Hand Baggage Allowance

In the Economy Class passengers are not allowed to carry hand luggage that exceeds 8kg while in the Business class passengers are allowed a hand luggage weight of up to 18kg, and they can bring with them only two pieces. However, it is important for travelers to note that the hand luggage must not exceed dimensions of 56cm x 45cm x 25cm.

Additionally, a passenger will be allowed to carry with them extra items separate from the hand luggage. These items are; a handbag for the ladies and a briefcase for the men, baby food in case a passenger is traveling with an infant, umbrellas, overcoats, wheelchairs or crutches for passengers with disabilities, laptops, reading material and flowers.

Albeit infants do not enjoy any checked baggage allowance, adults accompanying them are allowed to bring along infant carrying seats and fully collapsible strollers free of any charges.

Rates Applied On Excess Baggage

Passengers on this airline will be required to pay extra fees for any baggage that exceeds the allowance provided, and these rates are enforced as per the route of travel. Additionally, excess baggage fees will be applied as per the number of transfers and stop overs the passenger is expected to make during their travel. For instance, passengers meant to make two or more transfers along the route within 24 hours will pay for excess baggage fees once for an entire course. On the other hand, passengers who intend to make two or more stopovers that extend over 24 hours will be required to pay excess baggage fees for each of the flight segments.

Baggage Claims

The Passengers are advised to report any delayed baggage immediately to the Lost and Found counter where the details of their baggage will be collected and entered into a computerized system for tracking. Baggage that is lost will be compensated at a rate of USD 9.07 per pound which is approximately USD 20 per kg. To aid the tracing of lost baggage passengers are requested to remove old tags from their baggage and replace them with new ones reflecting the current flight.

Restricted and Banned Items

The airline prohibits the consumption of personally purchased alcohol inside the airline as only alcohol served by the airline is allowed on board. Concurrently, any sharp items that have the potential to be used as weapons are disallowed for carriage in the airline. In addition to that, items classified as dangerous goods will not be allowed in checked baggage. These items include; Explosives, compressed gasses, peroxides, toxic substances, radioactive material, magnetic substances and lithium battery powered materials.
