Summary

Summary
Last update: 12 Oct 2016

Vietnam Airlines is one of the airlines that understands the importance of careful handling of baggage and its effects on passengers' overall travel experience. For their checked in baggage, they insist on the passengers limiting their baggage to a weight of 32kg with dimensions that sum up to 203cm when the height, width, and length are added together. Should the baggage exceed the limits specified, the passenger will be requested to repackage the contents of their luggage or have it sent to their destination as cargo.

Those passengers traveling in their Business and Premium Class packages enjoy a checked in baggage allowance of 30kg and a provision to carry an additional two items of hand luggage while those using the Economy Class are permitted to only carry 20kg of checked in luggage with one hand luggage as an extra.

Additionally, they place restrictions on the hand luggage that can be allowed on board. Passengers are encouraged to carry hand luggage that weighs 7kg with a sum of the dimensions of width, height, and depth that does not surpass 115cm. The specific dimensions allowable are 56cm for width, 36cm for height and 23cm for depth. In the event that the baggage does not meet these specifications, the affected passenger will be required to enlist it as checked in luggage.

Cabin baggage on this airline is limited to a weight of 7 kg for every one seat and the desired pressure it should exert on the seat is 0.046kg/cm2. Importantly, clients going for this option, are advised to carefully package their cabin luggage so as to prevent damage to the airplane and potential harm to other passengers.

However, the passengers are allowed to take with them certain personal items on board in addition to their hand luggage. These include; books which the customers might like to read on the flight, a camera, a laptop computer in case they want to work on the go, a purse or a handbag and devices that aid the mobility of passengers who are living with a disability.

The airline has a special package called the 'Prepaid Baggage' that gives its passengers an opportunity to pay less for excess baggage by paying for it prior to their travel. This package which is exclusive to Vietnam Airlines and other airlines under its management is extended to passengers on condition that they pay for it six hours prior to the departure of the flight in which they are booked. It is also important for the passengers to note that this package cannot be applied to infants below the age of 2 years who are also passengers on a flight.

It is advised that any lost baggage should be reported immediately at the lost and found counter after which the matter will be followed up by the airline's representative. In the event that this is not done on arrival, then the affected passenger should go to the airline's website then fill and submit a form for claiming lost baggage. However, the client is encouraged to report lost baggage within a period of twenty-one days, damaged baggage within a period of seven days, and delayed baggage within a period of seven days. Should these periods lapse before any claim is filed by an affected passenger the airline will not take any action.

Lastly, there are restrictions applied to items that a passenger using this airline can carry in their baggage. In every baggage, the disallowed items are any poisonous substances, compressed flammable gasses, solids that are explosive in nature and chemicals that are highly radioactive, whereas the items that one cannot pack with their cabin baggage are firearms, sharp objects like a pair of scissors and small tools like pliers.
