Summary

Summary
Last update: 12 Oct 2016

Malaysia Airlines has four classifications for its checked baggage allowance to give its customers a variety of options to choose from when it comes to checked baggage. Passengers who would love to travel in the First Class are permitted to carry two baggage pieces of 50 kg or 110 lbs with a maximum dimension of 158cm or 62 inches. For those in the Business class, an allowance is made for up to two pieces of baggage weighing 40 kg or 88 lbs with dimensions of 158 cm or 62 inches while those traveling in the Economy Class are allowed two baggage pieces weighing 30 kg or 66 lbs with dimensions of 158 cm or 62 inches. The airline also permits its passengers to declare the value of their excess luggage over the approved liability limit.

However, for all passengers in these classes who are traveling with infants, an allowance is made for only one bag whose dimensions should not exceed 115cm or 45 inches. The bag which should weigh only 10 kg or 22 lbs can be carried as cabin baggage. A further provision is made that allows such passengers to carry onboard a collapsible baby chair, a baby carrying basket or a stroller. This airline’s passengers are also informed that any baggage should be presented individually and at no time should several bags strapped or stacked together be presented as one. They, further specify several conditions for their passengers when it comes to cabin baggage with a focus geared not only on safety but convenience and comfort for everyone on board. For this reason, both the First Class and Business class passengers are only allowed two cabin bags weighing 14 kg or 31 lbs in total, while the Economy Class Travellers are allowed only one piece of baggage weighing 7kg or 15 lbs in total with each piece of baggage for all travelers having a dimension of 115cm in total. Additionally, passengers are allowed to carry only one of the following items; a pick amongst a business briefcase or a notebook or a camera bag or a laptop bag not weighing more than 4kg or 9 lbs, a handbag for both male and female passengers, a bag containing duty-free items purchased at the airport, a walking stick or walking aids for those with a disability and an overcoat.

For baggage claims be it either for delayed, damaged or lost baggage, the airline specifies several key measures. In the event that baggage is lost or delayed, the client is advised to file a Property Irregularity Report with an airline representative at the Lost and found Office or the Mishandled Load office after which tracing of the luggage will be initiated. In the case of damaged baggage, the period for filing such a report is extended up to 7 days for regular claims or 21 days for cases involving insurance claims, but baggage damaged before check in will not be placed under this category. Generally, the following items are not allowed in checked luggage; any form of jewelry, fragile items, all types of cameras, electronic devices, business documents, artifacts, medication, and computers. Any device that is powered by lithium batteries is also not allowed onboard whether as checked luggage or carry-on luggage.

Finally, All items classified as either liquid, aerosol or gas should be in containers with volumes of 100ml and the containers should be in sealable bags that do not exceed one liter and a total circumference of 80 cm. Smoking an e-cigarette in the plane is not allowed and those with lithium batteries should have their batteries removed and stored in the cabin or carry-on luggage. Power banks solely used for charging other devices are allowed in the carry-on bags only, whereas sharp objects with a potential to be used as weapons are not allowed on the airplane.
