Summary

Summary
Last update: 24 Oct 2016

Most air travelers are worried about their baggage limits – what are the permissible dimensions, what are the maximum permissible weight limits and what are the items that can or cannot be carried in hand baggage and checked in baggage. To make matters worse, most airlines often neglect this aspect and either give inadequate details in respect of these or do not present these in a user-friendly manner.

It is a very common sight to see people arguing about their baggage at the check in counters of airlines at the airports. Inconvenience which passengers face includes but is not limited to leaving things behind at the airport, paying extra money and juggling things from one bag to another.

Here is some useful information on the rules Copa Airlines follows with respect to carry on baggage allowance, checked baggage, baggage claims and prohibited items.

1. Carry on baggage

In Copa Airlines, Business Class passengers are allowed 2 carry on baggage items not exceeding the maximum total size (Height + Length + Width) limit of 118 cm (46 in) including handles and wheels. Weight limit is 10 kg for each carry on baggage item. However, even for Business Class passengers in flights departing to or from the United States, carry on luggage policy is 1 carry on bag and 1 additional item. For flights within Colombia and Panama, even Business Class passengers are allowed only 1 carry on luggage item of maximum total size of 118 cm (46 in) as above, not exceeding 5 kg (11 lb) in weight.

2. Checked baggage Passengers are allowed Checked baggage items not exceeding the maximum total size (Height + Length + Width) limit of 157 cm (62 in) including handles and wheels. Weight limit for each such baggage item and the number of items allowed depends on your flight route. Copa Airlines wants its passengers to use the Copa Airlines’ Baggage Calculator to know the exact limits applicable. Full Baggage Policy of Copa Airlines is also available on its official website.

3. Baggage Claims

Copa Airlines has a well laid down procedure in respect of Baggage Claims. It compensates its passengers with cash or travel certificates for delayed priority bags which have complied with their time and check-in restrictions. However, the claim is required to be presented inside the customs office at the destination. Non-priority cases and PreferMember customers are subject to specified exceptions.

Copa Airlines is also a member of World Tracer, the renowned global program for tracking baggage. While the airlines has a policy where the passengers and their luggage travel on the same flight, if you don’t find your checked bag at the destination, you should lodge a complaint with their baggage service at the airport before leaving. They will give you a claim number and also explain the baggage claim process to you.

Automatic baggage tracking system of the airlines helps it find lost bags across the world on the basis of detailed information provided by the passengers.

4. Prohibited Items

Copa Airlines follows the U.S. Federal Law in respect of Prohibited Items. Some of the prominent prohibited items include firearms and ammunition, human remains, gas cylinders, chemicals and batteries. The actual list is quite exhaustive and covers very many other items as well.
